Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between deferring and splitting a tax debt into instalments? +

Deferral postpones payment of the full debt to a later date, whereas paying by instalments lets you split it into several stages. Both options are set out in tax law and usually require a prior application to the relevant authority.

Does deferring a tax debt generate interest? +

As a general rule, deferring a tax debt or paying it by instalments accrues late-payment interest during the deferral period, unless a specific rule provides otherwise. That is why it is worth reviewing the precise conditions of each municipal or regional decision.

Which local taxes were affected by these measures in Santander? +

The measures affected taxes such as the Motor Vehicle Tax, the Property Tax (IBI), the vehicle-access (vados) charge and the terrace charge, as well as various fees for municipal services, all of which were deferred, postponed or suspended depending on the case.

Do I need a solicitor to apply for a deferral of debts with the City Council? +
